In Remembrance of Doyald Young

I was asked by Josh Higgins to help out with a project to remember his teacher and mentor Doyald Young. I of course agreed without hesitation as Doyald has been an incredible inspiration for me as well as countless other letterers and designers. I’m saddened that I was never able to thank him in person, but thankful that I was able to take part in this wonderful tribute. Josh had been working with Doyald on a gift for a mutual friend when he became too ill to complete the project and after Doyald’s passing, contacted me to craft the phrase “Design is Everything is Design” in a copperplate script that hopefully Doyald wouldn’t cringe at. Proceeds of the poster sale will help set up a type scholarship in Doyald’s name. The poster is beautifully letterpressed and it was an honor to be a part of the project. Also, thanks always to Tina for helping to spread the news!

  1. Seems to be a substantial void when a cornerstone is lost.
The comfort is the gift of legacy they leave in their wake.
As in your work … beautiful, poetic as always.

  2. Hi Jessica,

The script it lovely. I’m sure Doyald would like it very much. I think the perceived angle of the ovaled-swash apogee’s could be a little more consistent. Don’t look at my spencerian efforts. I wish I could do what Doyald was able to. I worked my tail off in his class and got a B, as A’s were very rare. I think he would adore your Brioche font. It is stunning and so is your website.

Bon voyage with your design endeavors,
    Jeff

  3. Wow, you’re seriously talented. Enjoyed looking at your work and reading some of your job posts. Ever do any work for the feds?
    Best,
    -N

  4. The poster is beautiful and I really like the way you used the script and crafted the phrase. I love your website.
